No help to be found in Canada…except in Alberta

February 28, 2008
I’m reading two articles in the Globe and Mail that make nice, if somewhat mismatched, bookends for startup companies looking to hire resources. On the one hand, the statistical article Jobless rate hits 33 year low points out that Canada had a 5.8 percent unemployment rate in October. On the other hand, the anecdotal article Tech firms eye oil’s talent interviews Claudia Moore from Material Insight, Alice Reimer from Evoco, and Mike Lake from Entero, all of whom observe that any downturn in patch employment because of the royalty agreement shift may be a great thing for technology companies.

This is good timing. The loonie hits yet another high today, which should help us prevent any free resources from evaporating south. Nobody could be found to do anything about getting us some palm trees, though.
