Get an OLPC Laptop

by
You’ve probably heard of the OLPC initiative. It aims to produce a $100 laptop that can allow One Laptop Per Child to be distributed to third-world children. The units are very clever, with wireless networking, WebCams and microphones, and a pretty unique visual layer on the OS. Many analysts view this as primarily a social-networking initiative: if a child has a chance to reach broadly to other people and accepted repositories of information, the global level of education will go up. Among other things, this should (the theory goes) lower poverty and birth rates.

This is, at the very least, a huge experiment in the efficacy of social networking.

The laptops are in production now, but at a slightly higher cost than targeted. The price will come down over the next few months.

These laptops are not generally going to be available in North America. However, for a limited time you can get one if you donate one. See http://laptopgiving.org/en/index.php.
